TOPICAL STUDY

Topical Study C5328 December 2011 Session

Based on the information given in class on 12 March 2012.

All students are required to produce a TOPICAL STUDY, the topic could be any issues such as bio climatic, environmental, constructions, special materials or new architectural inventions.

Submission requirements

i. Four A3 size potrait presentation poster.

The presentation should include all the following :

• Title
• Introduction of the issue or problem.
• Objective of the research.
• Scope of research
• Methodology research.
• Analysis / Research
• Proposal / Conclusion

ii. Slide/ Multimedia presentation (in CD)

Week 12 :

• Selection / Proposed alternative topics.
• Discussed on proposal topics with your firm.
• Data collection towards your proposal topic.

Week 13

• Manage the report strategies
• Seek and compile data and literature study.
• Methodology structure.

Week 14

• Submit 1st Draft and proposal poster.
• Continued topicla study phase.
• 1st Draft comment

Week 15

• Prepare for final draft.
• Correction and final editing
• Poster preparation and comments.
• Multimedia comments

Week 16

• Topical study  submission and presentation
• Poster & Slide / Multimedia (CD)

A Day with SDP - Persuasion Stage 05032012

hopefully you guys obtained some valuable comments and informations from last monday's session with SDP.It was always good for us to hear opinions from the industry where they can relate from their own experiences and knowledge.here are some general comments from the event:

1. Several masterplans are acceptable but need to refine & upgrade.

2. Bubble diagrams did not show good relationship between spaces - important!!

3. proposed spaces need to be more defined - do not satisfy with general spaces only.

4. ensure spaces are 'workable' & able to function well accordingly.

5. proposed additional design features need to do more research & study.

ok...lets plan our work for the following week.As mentioned, next stage you all should work in scaled design drawings (some firms has already started) and revise your main design according to comments from SDP and lecturers. Then LD must delegate works among members and start to prepare detail design for each areas/spaces.

Also, by next week you all should start looking into TOPICAL STUDY where you must do research on technical side of design. Pick a category relevant to your space and spend some time to work category on your design.LD must also monitor progress of each members and ensure everybody can perform accordingly.

Time to Get back in Action....Design process

welcome back to the studio!! after 1 week mid term break hopelfully you guys are ready to continue our museum project.

ok, straight to the point...

last session one of the firm in your class showed me a cadd drawing of museum layout ( complete with door opening & windows). i was shocked to see that they 've already advanced to that level since your BDI is still 'kucar kacir!!

the point is that you need to go along with the proper pocess of design in order to develop your idea. 1st thing is to develop BUBBLE DIAGRAMS.

a Bubble Diagram is a GRAPHIC VERSION of your design layout. it is used to show spaces, circulations and spatial relationship.

while you develop your bubble diagram, you should consider a few aspects such as site analysis, case studies, references and other datas in order to built up your building layout. based on that, a prelimilary design concept can be established. Definitely, comments & LOTS & LOTS of crits sessions will help to develop a good bubble diagram and eventually can produce a good design.

remember...GOOD DESIGNS ARE NOT PRODUCED IN A SINGLE NIGHT...so be prepare to work extra hard if you want to prepare good design....

By monday 27 feb 2012 we hope to see some acceptable preliminary layout using bubble diagrams. Dont just limit to 1 diagram only...at least each FIRM MUST HAVE 3 ALTERNATIVE BUBBLE DIAGRAMS.

Also...dont forget your REVISED BDI (boombastic,fantastic,mr. lova-lova ideas)!!!

The industries POV is extremely Important, learn from them. The museum project sounds Interesting and challenging, all the best with the competition and may the winners be from PUO!

I was reading the last post by EnYusri, interesting, let ask all of you a question and I do hope you will answer it honestly, no strings attached:

Which is more important to you as final year students, to pass the programme or to learn via exploration?

CengkeRang Phobia & a Day with SDP

A very tiring day last saturday 11 Feb 2012 when all firms presented their masterplan 5 BDI.A good effort from you guys but STILL the results were not-very-satisfying FOR GROUP OF 5 student.

Overall i personallly believed that you guys still do not work as a team YET. Most masterplans presented seems 'undercooked' and the BDIs were done not in fully-hearted manner.MAJORITY OF BDI USED 'CENGKERANG/SEASHELL' as a metaphor with the image of a museum look like a GIANT KERANG or TERUMBU KARANG!!! <---- become a phobia to me!!!!

it was totally opposite from my design input regarding 'how to generate ideas' which i stress on the ESSENCES of idea for building design NOT direct translation of an idea (remember the 'Ikan' & 'Picnic basket' building?)...

As mentioned, you should 'digest' your mind with ideas which are fresh and new and combine it with a good research and study. Remember...let your mind wander on potential ideas and use your senses to develop it. Dont stop thinking....ask yourself questions about the idea and try to find solution for it.

last monday 13 feb 2012 we had a very interesting session where Studioplan Design Partnership (SDP) came to the studio and gave some valuable advise and comments. To me,it was a good 'eye-opener' moments when AR Raja Azman, En Mior, En Kama, En Rais & En Jai gave their thoughts and views during the masterplan & BDI presentation. You listened to comments from another perspective, he INDUSTRY point of view which were very inspiring.

It was not surprising when SDP commented on the selected BDI which is believed is not very strong. They also threw some questions that are to me has good points regarding the idea.You guys are lucky as we are still in the early stage of design and there are some time to consider your BDI.....

Just like what AR Raja Azman said; "...if you want to fail..., FAIL in style..." meaning dont be sorry or sad when you have great ideas but failed the subject, at least you have tried something different rather than you playsafe and gave an average effort just to passed the subject.

In my words, better to fail with efforts on boombastic ideas and extravaganza conceptual rahter than fail because of incomplete work or late submission....AT LEAST YOU FAIL WITH PRIDE!!!

Melaka Urban Study Videography - Superb Effort!!!

on wednesday 1 Feb 12 we all watched 7 videography on urban elements and it was very entertaining. you guys did a VERY good job in composing a interesting video.Unfortunately i tried to upload one video but failed (maybe too large)..

Overall, we were satisfied with your effort.hopefully you all could understand better about urban study based on the video.By using video/movie,it make it easier to explain our result/research/data to an audience. In general below are some comments from us:

Good storyline with nice effects - made your video look profesional

too much relying on video-no other references - only 1 group did a layout plan which better explained - other just show video & statement only.

interview - 1 group did interview 1 tourist - excellent!! this show that you have confidence

we believed you guys had fun doing the task as we enjoyed watching it. hopefully you can improve more in the stage -THE MASTERPLAN & BDI

Klebang Submarine Museum - Site Analysis Presentation 01022012

yesterday we had a session where site analysis of our project being presented.Below are several comments for your next course of action :
SITE - need to show entrance road from Jalan Klebang Besar to our site, to indicate initial site measurement (based on hoarding), no indication of site context.
NEIGHBOURHOOD CONTEXT & LEGAL - 'pulau' could be potential landmark, river condition- can it be used for our design? , Bistro - status on operating hours - day/night?, Dataran 1Malaysia - very likely to be linked to the site-How?? Proposed Water theme park - another good potential link - access/entry possibility
MAN-MADE & NATURAL PHYSICAL FEATURES - empty land can create endless possibility - go figure out how to grap this chance.
CIRCULATION/SENSORY/UTILITIES - good examples of parking layout - to include bus layout, suggest suitable utilities -office layout/toilet/surau/foodcourt etc - more images to support your research. Sensory - not enough informations - should cover visual/sound/smell, pollutions-suggest ways to overcome the problems
CLIMATE - get your NORTHPOINT right!! important to know sunpath as our main exhibit IS outdoor (remember??) it shall affect your design orientation. Good review on weather & tempreture - meaning design shall need LOTS & LOTS of shading in our site.

Overall, site analysis ISN'T just collecting datas & facts or just taking pictures of the site..you must know how to digest all infos and make an appropriate synthesis. Meaning you should able to UNDERSTAND and able to give respond/output of the task.

As mentioned in studio, please revise & amend all analysis before printing out. All analysis shall be in A3 size paper and shall be pinned on display board behind our studio.....

Melaka...Here We Come..!!!

Asalam & selam sejahtera Sem6 Dis 2011,

hari ini merupakan hari yang agak padat di studio...

anda semua telah dibahagikan kepada kumpulan yang akan membentuk The Firm, menyediakan ruang utk firm masing2, diberi taklimat tentang projek 2 C5328 Design 4 dan juga sedikit input berkenaan urban elements yang akan digunapakai dalam proses rekabentuk. Dan saya pasti ada antara anda yang mungkin tidak dapat catch up dengan agenda yang berjalan pagi tadi.(sebab ramai yang nampak mengantuk..)

Nevermind, lets refresh our mind on what need to be done in near future...
1st - setup firm's organization ( name/logo/mission/vision etc)
2nd - each firm need to do case study on museums,space planning,maritime etc as discussed.
3rd - each firm need to look into the 7 urban elements discussed during input session.
4th - prepare youself for study trip to Melaka (the event you guys waiting for) - dont forget the camera!!

these are the things which need to be considered by you guys.personally myself,Cik Fatimah and Cik Sue are quite excited to see your progress in this project.

sepertimana yang diterangkan dalam sesi briefing pagi tadi,projek 2 adalah projek selaras bagi Sem 6 DSB Politeknik iaitu Cadangan Pembangunan Kompleks Pelancongan Klebang Melaka terdiri dari muzium kapal selam,replika kapal Cheng Ho dan Kapal mendam Berahi (tak salah saya) dan sebagainya.projek ini akan dipertandingkan di antara politeknik yang terlibat (Psis/PMM/Puo).

My advise : be prepare to do extraordinary things for your firm and project. Aim high and try to reach for the stars!! tinggalkan sementara kawan/famili/bff/bf/gf (tak lama...3 bulan je) untuk concentrate your final project. kalau you guys put your minds & efforts together kami yakin you all can do the best...

Probably someone should try google where exactly is our site ( tip: pantai klebang melaka). sapa2 yang dapat boleh print and bring along during our visit.

WELCOME SEM6A DIS 2011!!! better late than never ...

greetings sem6A,
its been quite a while since we update our blog.this was due to some issues on deciding on your project for this semester.nevertheless, it has been resolved and we shall deal with some interesting tasks for you guys.
1st of all, i believe you all have introduced to the studio lecturers for this semester.Myself,Cik Sue and Cik Fatimahwati will guide and facilitate your class.Cik Sue gave an overall view on Design 4 and the projects which we will undertake. We hope you all understand all the tasks and prepare to get down and dirty with it.(??!!...)

we started off with a quick pretest on construction and technical and what a surprise we've got!!
out of 35 students only 2 were managed to perform to the standard we've looking for.But do not worry....we shall give proper guidance and hopefully you guys shall rise to the occasion.this is the time you will learn and do not afraid to make mistakes because making mistakes will make you learn...

by now you all probably know that Cik Sue is preparing for a trip for you guys.so be nice to her and make sure you all come early to studio every morning,ok...?

~Design Port Folio Review~

as you all already know, our portfolio review will be held on 24th Nov 2011 this thursday.As mentioned before, it will be in the format of interview...similar to the process you all will be encountered later when applying for jobs.

the portfolio will be reviewed by 3 panels consist of 2 lecturers each:

Panel A : Wira , Think Green , Kongsi , Buloh at Studio 6A

Panel B : Creads , Sevarch , Limitless , Fanz at Studio 6B

Panel C : FH , MDA , Dream Studio , Krakasa at Studio 5 aka 'the Oven'

each student will be interviewed INDIVIDUALLY to see the performance throughout the semester. the panels will look into several kriterias such as technical knowledge,design understanding,aptitude and attitude.

the schedule are as below:

8am - 9am = Preparation of Exhibition - group & individual works

9am - 12.30pm = Interview Session

12.30 - 2.30pm = Break

2.30 - 4.00pm = Interview Session (cont)

4pm- 4.30pm = Conclusion

so be prepared... COME EARLY to arrange your work in each studio....get ready with all documents & drawings...redo/repair/upgrade according to comments during the entire semesters.

All drawings must be in A3 size with relevant documents nicely arranged in your individual file.this should include all design process drawings which youre involved.

get a haircut...make sure your dress nicely ironed...polish up your shoes...the key point here is to make your self PRESENTABLE and look CONFIDENT

Well Done but lets move on!

Well done to all of the Firms involved in the final presentation. Our Industrial Academic Partner, SDP, gave positive comments to most of your work so you should be happy with your achievement. However, the journey is not over. Portfolio is your last bridge to cross before graduating from PUO Architecture program.

TEST 01 - individual progress

Morning guys...

as being mentioned by en Yusri, U guys need to submit your individual progress on Monday not late that 12.00pm. this submission is actually a test for individual mark. this test will differentiate mark/grade between one student with another. so even though U are in a same Firm, doesn't mean that u will get the same grade as what your friends get.

more works/progress u done meaning more marks u will get. but please guys....don't submit rubbish as ur test coz it will surely goes into a dustbin in our office. make it nicely as u arrange it, put some clip/bind/tape, make a front cover and etc2. before u done it, here are the things dat u need to take a look at it:-

- what should i put in this progress A3 test/report?
- what kind of progress dat lecturer want to see?
- which project dat should be in this report?
- some say manual but some say computer..may i do both?
- is it in writing format, drawings, sketches, pictures, boards presentation...

so guys...hurry up & dont waste a time. as time goes by, u are already left behind. so start ur work when u done read this OK..

inilah kita di Bilik B33 Blok JKA kampus A....mmg kurang selesa spt di studio namun kerja perlu diteruskan. Situasi pembangunan dan renovasi di kampus B sedikit sebanyak menganggu momentum student apatah lagi di penghujung semester bila dateline projek makin hampir.Saya dan lecturer lain berharap student dapat cope dgn situasi ini dan kami berdoa agar anda dapat melaksanakan tugas dan kerja dengan lancar despite all the trouble we faced along this semester.

okay, back to bisness....at the end of design class last wednesday we were VERY worry about most of the firms' progress individually as well as in group. Some firms even didnt resolve the main layout plan...resulting other members just 'GOYANG KAKI' doing nuthing the whole session.This is disturbing as time is NOT in your favour anymore.While some firms has advanced to individual stage,still there were few of you who thought that individual works means just INSERTING furnitures into floor plans!!

sorry but that's not the way a designer works.

What you should do is to IMAGINE how the space functions and how you (as the user) uses the space...plus how you want the interior looks like...consider the choices of finishes to be used ~ floor pattern,column design etc. according to the firm theme and BDI.

And also include the ByLaws & services - A/C, lightings, sewerage, plumbing, watertanks, Fire fighting requirements-max. travel distance, hosereel compartment,Risers (telephone/electrical/plumbing) ~ dont forget...these things should be included in SEM 6 PROJECT!!

as the dateline getting nearer and nearer, we should see good consistent progress.....but ONLY if you all can commit and focus on your works for just a few weeks more...so lets work together as a team and give 110% attention to Boutique Hotels....2 more weeks to go to dateline....

tinggal lagi 3 minggu utk anda menyediakan design utk boutique hotel.masa semakin suntuk dan anda perlu fokus utk memastikan kerja dapat disiapkan dalam tempoh yg ditetapkan.di bawah ada beberapa komen dr saya secara general.

a. Unresolved Design : masih ada firm yg tidak resolve spatial arrangement based on BDI & SOA - perlu diselesaikan BY NEXT WEEK!! LD perlu proaktif dan lead firma dgn baik serta buat decision yg wajar setelah berbincang dgn ahli kumpulan berkenaan dgn susunatur ruang hotel.delegatekan tugas design ruang antara ahli dan on Monday revise design sehingga siap

b. Main Structural Grid System - hotel anda should have proper grid system for columns and beams. biasanya grid system adalah 4m hingga 8m bergantung pada design. Semak semula design hotel dgn memasukkan grid yg sesuai dan selaraskan ruang mengikut grid tersebut.

c. Interior Spaces Design - next week hotel anda should have proper interior design based on functions. no more empty boxy spaces in your hotels..we want to see detail design on every spaces. LD must delegate works among members and pls coordinate your firm well. For some good examples you can refer inputs by enSid last semester which are very helpfull...check it!!

d. Services - next week we want to see hotel layouts with services considerations i.e TNB substation, aircond,watertanks,sewerage, pumproom,lifts etc.these items should be allow in your designs based on your Topical Studies.

e. UBBL/Bomba - make sure you check requirements from authorities i.e ramp gradient,max. travel distance for fire escape,setbacks etc.

f. Crit Session - pls make sure you have proper drawing when having crit with lecturers.pls print out your drawings so we can scribble onto your design.

Polytechnic designFEST (PdF)

BDI and SHR

Salam Sem06,

BDI is here! This is the most creative phase of the project.

For this phase, PLEASE study and analize the data that you have collected. Based on them, divide your firm into 2 sub-firms and each sub-firm is to propose a design. Presentation Requirements are to be presented on 2 (two) A1 boards as follows:

First A1 Board:
- A short summary of your site analysis
- Name your Hotel and design a logo
- Propose a boutique Hotel concept
- Early Schematics (Site Plan (1 plan), Plans (2 plans), Elevations(2) and Sections(2))

Second A1 Board:
- Artist Impression (2 interior and 2 exterior perspectives). Click here to see samples.

Each sub-firm will compete with each other by presenting their ideas to the clients (Tutors and SDP). The Best Design Idea will be the chosen concept to be implemented by your firm later. Let the ideas flow!

THE MORNING SHOW: Speaker's Corner

Assalam sem 6,

Last friday (19th August) was the 1st performance by Dream Studio for our Speaker's Corner session. it was quite entertaining with morning tazkirah and a nice poetic song (indonesian song i believe..).

As mentioned earlier, speaker's corner is a platform for students to express themselves positively and hopefuly it will be a good culture in the future.it is also a 'break' session for students... as works are piling up and more assignments to be done,there should be a method to release the preassure a bit...

in the speaker's corner students can sing, recite poems,perform a scene or just babbling away on whatever install in the heart and mind...as long as its good and entertaining with a nice massage behind the performance. so,no headbanging concerts allowed ok...

so we can't wait for the next performances starting this wednesday by Sevarch,FH,Kongsi Design Group,Wyra,Buloh,Kracasa,Fanz,Think Green,Limitless,MDA and lastly Creads.
